Big Hopes Big Future

As well as our home-visiting service, Home-Start Portsmouth also runs a school readiness project which also takes place in the home. This project is called Big Hopes Big Future.

Big Hopes Big Future is a programme that recognises the importance of a positive early home learning environment on children's readiness for school and learning. Our specifically trained volunteers can support families over a 12 week intervention which is mapped to the Early Year's Foundation Stage Framework.

At Home-Start, we know that childreen need a stimulating home learning environment to help them start school ready to learn and to reach their full potential. This programme has been designed to help you and your children get ready for the important first steps of going to school. You might want help with one, two or all of the steps below so that your child can:

  • Arrive at school fed and on time
  • Play and share with other children
  • Recognise their own name
  • Understand simple hygiene
  • Dress and put on shoes
  • Eat and drink unaided
  • Cope away from you
  • Use the toilet
