Home-Start Portsmouth turns 30

Find out how you can join in with celebrating a whopping 30 years!

Home-Start Portsmouth turns 30

Home-Start Portsmouth has been supporting families during their most challenging times since 1992 and in November we will celebrate our 30-year anniversary.

We would like to invite you to join us in a celebratory evening of music, fundraising and gratitude to our wonderful volunteers and supporters.

During the celebrations there will be entertainment from Craic ‘n’ Sessions, who are a very popular local family band, as well as background entertainment provided by a local Unmade Radio DJ and an auction hosted by one of our amazing longstanding volunteers.

Need for our services is rapidly growing within the city and we know that early intervention works. By working alongside and supporting families in need a child’s life chances improve. Our team of trained volunteers change lives, throwing parents a vital lifeline. We have demonstrated that our model is sustainable, even through a pandemic, and our ambition is now to scale up what we do to give children the best start in life.

All funds raised on the evening and during the 30-day challenge will go directly to enabling us to help more families and shorten our waiting times.

Paul runs the Great South Run

I am running this year’s Great South Run, Portsmouth (Sunday 16th October 2022) for a local charity: Home-Start, specifically to support a local charity and families. Whilst teaching in Portsmouth schools (since 2003), I’ve seen how family life has changed and have been affected; and the needs & wellbeing of our children (our future) too … particularly, during the last few ‘Covid’ years.

It’s the first time Home-Start Portsmouth, have entered a runner into our local ‘Great South Run’, and I’m very happy and honoured to be able to run for them.

Please do consider donating and help support our local community.

Team Gatehouse run the Great South Run

This year I will be running the GSR 10 miles raising funds for the awesome Homestart- Portsmouth who have been supporting families for 30 years this October!  As a health visitor I have worked alongside Homestart on and off for over a decade and have seen the incredible difference that they make. We refer families for variety of support including groups and 1:1 peer support. Their volunteers have been a life line to many families, being someone they can talk to and offering vital links into the wider community, helping them to access playgroups, parks and other services, reducing isolation and stress. Over the last few years this has been more important than ever!

When I said I was running and shared the help Homestart offer my awesome son Sam (aged 10) said he wanted to do something to help families access this support.  So he has signed himself up for junior (9-15 year olds, 2.5km) event.

Please consider donating even a small amount for this amazing organisation.

Thank you!

Lisa Runs the Great South Run AND the HYROX Birmingham Doubles on the same weekend

This year is tough for everyone and without Charitys such as these who depen on fundraising events so many families will be pushed further down into poverty debt and depression.

Home-Start works with families in communities right across the UK. Starting in the home, our approach is as individual as the people we’re helping. No judgement, it is just compassionate, confidential help and expert support.

Last year Home-Start supported 56,000 children in 27,000 families, in communities across the UK.

There are over 180 local, independent Home-Starts working in 71% of local authority areas across the UK.

Across all four nations of the United Kingdom, 13,500 home-visiting volunteers support over 27,000 families and 56,000 children to transform their lives.

Families struggling with post-natal depression, isolation, physical health problems, bereavement and many other issues receive the support of a volunteer who will spend around two hours a week in a family’s home supporting them in the ways they need.

Home-Starts across the UK also support families in groups, hold day trips and Christmas parties and help access local services, as well as lots of other support.

As i partake in the GSR most years I always try to do a little bit of donation raising for charitys close to my heart, this year I have decided to take it to the next level and compete and the HYROX birmingham doubles on the day prior to the race as an added challenge. For those who arent aware HYROX is a competetive fitness event consisting of 8 1km runs with a functional exercise between each run the stations are 1000m skierg, a heavy sled push, a heavy sled pull, 80m broad jump burpees. 1000m row, 200m kettlebell farmers carry, 100m walking sandbag lunges, 75 wall ball to 9ft target.
