In October 2025, parents and carers of children under two from across Portsmouth came together at the Home-Start Portsmouth Family Forum to share their experiences of maternity care, infant feeding, and support in the early years.
Families spoke openly about what worked well and what could be better. Many described how good communication and person-centred care helped them feel confident and supported during pregnancy and after birth. When care was consistent and staff had time to listen, parents felt truly heard. As one attendee shared, “I felt really heard and grateful for an opportunity to speak.”
The forum also highlighted areas where families need more support. Some parents felt rushed, pressured into decisions, or left uncertain due to staffing pressures and inconsistent information. Clearer explanations, more time with staff, and better support for maternal mental wellbeing were recurring themes. Families also called for improvements to digital tools and easier access to practical, face-to-face learning opportunities.
Across all discussions, two things mattered most to families: communication and consistency. The forum provided a valuable space for parents and carers to share their journeys and help shape services so that every family in Portsmouth can have the best possible start in life.
