About Home-Start Portsmouth

Home-Start Portsmouth is a voluntary organisation committed to promoting the welfare of families with at least one child under five years of age.

Who we are

Home-Start Portsmouth is an independent family support charity that was established in 1992 and has supported thousands of families in the city since its launch.

We exist to enable local parents to be the best they can be by offering emotional and practical help through trained volunteers, both in family homes, out in the community, and in the Portsmouth Family Hubs.

Support is available for families that are experiencing a whole range of difficulties: bereavement, isolation, multiple births, postnatal depression to name a few.

A range of Stay & Play groups are also run in the Family Hubs and are open to all.

Volunteers provide support for families, and are trained and supported by experienced coordinators who are there to guide and advise them throughout.

Volunteers supporting families

What we do

Family life with young children can be difficult and stressful at times, and this is when it helps to have someone to turn to and rely on.

Families struggling with postnatal depression, isolation, illness, bereavement or family breakdown, and many other issues, receive the support of a trained volunteer who will spend around two to three hours a week in a family’s home supporting them in the ways they need. This is supported by expert help from our coordinators who also run parenting programs to support families.

Families can access support within the Portsmouth Family Hubs from a Family Hub Champion. This is face-to-face support and can be as quick as a small query or as bigger as some consistent support to navigate any struggles.

We also have trained volunteers who run Stay & Play groups in the community so that parents and children are able to socialise with each other in a safe and stimulating environment. For the latest on these groups, please ensure you join our Stay & Play Facebook group

Areas we cover

We support families in all areas of Portsmouth, PO1 – PO6.

There are other local Home-Start’s who would be able to offer support if you live outside of the Portsmouth city boundary.

“Home-Start raises self-confidence, improves social networks, reduces difficult behaviour on the part of the child and improves mental and physical health” – Every Child Matters Government Green Paper.

Trustee

Home-Start Portsmouth is looking for two new Trustees to join our Board and contribute to the development and success of the charity.

We are looking for two Trustees to join our Board, which is currently made up of eight Trustees and CEO.

Trustees have overall control of a charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. They may be known as other titles, such as: directors; board members; governors, and committee members. Trustees are the people who lead the charity and decide how it’s run.

We are specifically looking for someone with the following skills and attributes:

· Good understanding of Portsmouth (PO1-PO6), its business and social networks

· Ability to think strategically, work collaboratively and make informed decisions

· Experience of corporate sales and/or fundraising experience within the charity sector, ideally with experience of social value, legacy donations and developing large-scale income streams

OR

· Experience of senior level corporate management with experience of business development, writing strategies and managing organisational change

Professional and/or lived experience of children’s services or the family charity sector in Portsmouth is desirable. Previous board/trustee experience is not necessary as training will be given.

Each Trustee commits approximately 1-2 days per month. This includes six-weekly Board meetings – which usually take place on Wednesdays, 5.30-7.30pm, at Home-Start Portsmouth’s office at The Haven, Lake Road, PO1 4HA – and some ‘out of committee’ between meetings.

To apply, please email our Chair of Trustees, Hayley Cook, on hayleyc@hsportsmouth.org.uk with your expression of interest and CV/LinkedIn profile or for an informal conversation.

Andy Osborn - Trustee and Treasurer

Having been born and brought up in Portsmouth, he has strong links to the area, and joined the Home-Start Portsmouth Board of Trustees in 2023.

He currently lives in Fareham with his wife Heather, 2 dogs (spaniels) and has a daughter (Lucy) who is at Medical School in Birmingham.

Bev Vaughan - Trustee

Bev is a retired Matron with 39 years in the NHS working in a variety of nursing specialties including general medicine, older person’s medicine and orthopedics. It is important to her that she continues to give something positive back to society and especially important that she helps struggling families. As a Home-Start Portsmouth Trustee she brings a diversity of managerial and organisational abilities and excellent people skills. Her husband is a longstanding Home-Start volunteer.

Linda Jenkins - Trustee

Linda has followed a career in health care, as a nurse, midwife and health visitor and worked overseas in community health. In her final years with the NHS she was a lead for safeguarding children for a local community health trust, working with colleagues across agencies and particularly in partnership with Portsmouth City Council social care, representing health on the Local Safeguarding Board, on the multi-agency training team and managing the NHS safeguarding training programmes. Currently lecturing part time at the University of Portsmouth she volunteers with Kings College University, London on their health professionals’ education programmes in Somaliland and Sierra Leone. As well as being a Trustee for Home-Start Portsmouth, Linda is Chair of Governors for a local Primary school and on the Board of Trustees of her local church.

Tarnia Simmons - Trustee

Tarnia is a previous shareholder and company director of Bernard’s Estate Agents in Portsmouth, with experience in business management including sales, accounting, HR and lettings.

Having lived in Portsmouth all of her life, Tarnia has joined Home-Start Portsmouth to be apart of a local charity and put her love of fundraising and events to support the local community.

Tarnia continues to live in Portsmouth with her 2 teenage children and dog.

Jo Goodship - Trustee

In 2022 Jo left the University of Portsmouth after 25 years. She was a senior teaching and research fellow in social research methods.  In her career she headed up several major research projects funded by central and local government, NGOs, and national and local charities.

One of those projects was based on the then Labour Government’s Sure Start Initiative and she witnessed, firsthand, the importance of supporting families with young children, and the difference that could make to parents, but especially children under five years old.

She was, therefore, thrilled to join the Board of Trustees in late 2022. Jo has lived in Southsea since 1983 with her two dogs – her three children are now all very grown-up and have moved away, but they all still enjoy coming back for visits to their home town.
